When you come along for a consultation I will ask you at some point during the session what you are looking for in a coach. You may have thought about it in vague terms prior to meeting or certainly have a sense of what you are you looking for, but it is a good idea to be able to voice it.
Interestingly I came across this thread on Twitter recently which I thought had some good pointers. Please note that this includes all types of therapy, not just coaching.
For those of you not on Twitter I have selected a few to share:
Overall kind, supportive, non judgmental demeanour
Is attentive when I'm speaking, doesn't interrupt w/o good/special reasons.
Responds in a way that lets me know she understood and was listening.
Has professional & life experience.
That they are not cold towards you and what I mainly look for is that they are not scared to show they are human.
Unconditional positive regard, along with listening at a deep level and an ability to pose challenging questions as a result of what they have heard.
Warmth, experience, someone who doesn't spend the entire time talking about themselves and most importantly, to allow me to go back to process things to be able to move forward...
...also feeling at ease and not rushed through sessions is a big one for me
I can honestly, hand on heart say that I can offer the above!
Something else that often comes up is being accountable, as in allowing you to check in with me with your plans and to see how things are progressing. No judgement, just support.
